It’s a fact that I’ve always wanted to own my own business, be my own boss. I want to be just like the people featured on this site, making their own decisions and selling their own goods. Features impressive interviews of small business owners of different trades including a design company, retail store, and book cover designer. Until I break out on my own, this site will give me something to aspire to.

Pages from Maira Kalman’s new book, the Principles of Uncertainty.

It’s an amazing book taken from Kalman’s column in The NewYorker. In the book, her whimsical paintings are woven together with existential questions about identity and happiness. Kalman is an illustrator, author, and designer and along with 12 children’s books, has done covers for The NewYorker, fabric for Isaac Mizrahi and accessories for Kate Spade. I love it! To see more about this wise, witty and slightly off-kilter woman click here to hear her speak at the TED conference and here for a short but totally worthwhile documentary about her.

P.S. Her daughter’s name is Bodoni.

simply breakfast

This photographer pays homage to the most important meal of the day–breakfast. She captures the scene of each morning in magical compositions. Click here to see more.

Stumbling upon this site has made me think more about breakfast, or the lack thereof. Although many dieticians and doctors recommend eating a balanced breakfast every day, very FEW people actually follow through with this. They don’t seem to care about the fact that their bodies need fuel to get their brains working in the morning. And being busy, with no time for breakfast, is not an excuse. Breakfast will get your body started and set you up for the rest of the day. Breakfast is my favorite. Maybe it’s because I was raised with my parents feeding me breakfast every morning or maybe it’s because my body has greater needs than the rest of the population, but I NEED to eat breakfast. Always. It need not be a complete spread of eggs, bacon, and pancakes, tea and crumpets. For me, it may be only a piece of fruit or granola bar with my morning coffee, but it’s better than nothing.

Two great examples from Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch. A very talented young illustrator and fine artist from San Francisco, California. I especially liked his progress page because it allows an inside look into his life and work environment. Check it out: http://www.lorenholyoke.com/.
